Go Beyond Appreciation on World Teachers’ Day

Since 1994, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has celebrated World Teachers’ Day on October 5th. Each May we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day, but World Teachers’ Day goes so far beyond appreciation. UNESCO describes World Teachers’ Day as “a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.”

Make Teaching a Collaborative Profession

If we really want to “rethink the way ahead,” we have to make teaching a collaborative profession. Teaching is too important to be done in isolation. Yet, in many schools, doors close, silos form, and collaboration gets treated as a special event instead of a core component of the school culture.

It’s time to change that. To truly elevate teaching, we need to support teachers with opportunities to excel in a collaborative profession. In fact, making the shift From Silos to Teams is one of the Ten Mindsets for Transformational Leadership from Students Taking Charge: An Implementation Guide for Leaders.

Maximize the Power of Teacher Collaboration

What if every teacher in a school used the same language to talk about teaching and learning? What words would you want to hear?

A common language is more than jargon. It’s the glue that holds professional conversations together. It allows teachers to engage in meaningful dialogue and engage in goal-setting together. It is a first step in elevating teacher collaboration.

The Future Is Collaborative

Professional Learning Experiences (PLEs) provide that shared vocabulary and common language. PLEs don’t just deliver content—they align teachers around common goals and visions, making collaboration natural and impactful. That’s the path to transforming teaching from isolated practice to a collaborative profession. And when teachers thrive together, students win.

Go beyond appreciation. Celebrate teachers with real opportunities to collaborate.

As you celebrate World Teachers’ Day, how will you support teachers to strengthen their collaboration and rethink professional learning as a shared journey?
