Whether you are a new teacher entering the profession, a veteran with years of experience, or somewhere in between, if you teach in the Jersey City Public Schools, your professional development is guided by Tina DelGiodice and Cynthia Jones. Veterans of the system, both Tina and Cynthia work to provide workshops, mentoring, and support to all teachers in the district.
Four years ago, the district designed the dual staff developer positions within the Curriculum and Instruction Department. Prior to that, both Tina and Cynthia taught in various grades and subjects. Tina's 30 years of teaching experience in Jersey City includes 26 years of high school English, and Cynthia's 26 years include Pre-K, science, and seventh grade.
Their passion for teaching and learning . . .
When you meet Cynthia and Tina, their passion for teaching and learning shines through. "I like seeing the growth process and following them throughout the year," commented Tina on her work with teachers.
"I like helping teachers to overcome challenges," said Cynthia. "And I am always looking for the next tool I can offer teachers."
Words of Advice for New Teachers . . .
Although they offer development opportunities to all teachers, a large portion of their work is devoted to the new teachers in the district - both new to the profession and to Jersey City Public Schools. When asked about advice they would offer to new teachers, Cynthia said, "There is always a way to reach each child. It can work. Don't be afraid to take risks. Don't be afraid to try."
Tina commented, "Hang in there. It's going to get better. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel. You are capable and you are better than you think you are."
Thanks to the passion for supporting teachers shared by Tina and Cynthia, new teachers in Jersey City have a tremendous support network that begins before they ever enter the classroom. Each August, new teachers attend several days of workshops to welcome them to the district and they also attend follow-up workshops through-out the year. This year, IDE consultants participated in the summer training with a workshop and keynote address by President, Dr. Nancy Sulla, and they are providing three days of follow up training during the school year.
In addition to the workshops, Cynthia and Tina designed both online and phone support through a Hotline for teachers who have questions or need help.
Rewards and Challenges . . .
Both agreed that the greatest challenge they face is keeping up with the new strategies to meet the
needs of today's students because they are so different. When asked about the greatest rewards they find in their roles as Staff Developers for such a large district, Tina said, "It's simple. When teachers come to me and say, 'I got a lot out of that workshop. I enjoyed it. Can you give us more?' I know I reached them."
"I like seeing my 'kids' come back as teachers," said Cynthia. "It excites me."
