What grades/subjects do you teach?

Fifth grade - science, reading, and math

How are you integrating problem-based learning into your teaching?

Many units of study involve PBL tasks. In geometry, the students are designing screen savers involving specific geometric shapes, angles, lines, etc. It requires mastery of all the geometry terminology they are learning.

In science, we are working on PBL tasks revolving around our grant.

In reading, the students are designing character trading cards featuring the characters from the novel, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

What are the activities/goals/etc. that you have in connection to the grant?

My goals are:

1. to facilitate understanding between people of diverse backgrounds and cultures
2. to foster collaboration between teachers
3. to expand knowledge of the ocean, ocean occupations, and awareness of environmental concerns
4. to increase knowledge of Spanish & ASL
5. to foster a love for learning
6. increase technology skills

What are your students' reactions to the grant?

The students are so very excited about this venture. They can't wait to work with their partners from Haledon both using videoconferencing and email. The parents also are enthusiastic about this opportunity for their children.

How have you used/will you use technology?

We have videoconferenced once already and will continue to do so on a regular basis. The teachers are emailing each other. The children will begin to do this also with their partners from their sister school. The children will design a Power Point presentation for the culmination of the grant that will be presented to the communities of Sparta and Haledon. Digital pictures and videos will be included in this. T-shirts will be designed, possibly using the computer. Brochures about each of the schools have been scanned by the computer and shared with the other class (click here to see some examples).

What grades/subjects do you teach?

I teach 5th Grade American Sign Language (ASL). It is the second year of a two-year program; a continuation and expansion of what they learned in the fourth grade.

How are you integrating PBL into your teaching?

The curriculum is designed around problem-based learning (PBL). For example, one of the tasks they encounter is how/what one would sign to someone who is deaf and needs directions to a local grocery store. I integrate PBL into my class everyday. The students are constantly being asked what they think a sign may appear, or what on origin of a sign may be based on the appearance of the sign. The children are challenged to think critically, while enjoying themselves.

What are the activities/goals/etc. that you have in connection to the grant?

The general goal for the World Language component of the grant is to introduce the children of Haledon to American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. Conversely, I hope that the grant will introduce Spanish and Spanish Culture to the children of Sparta.

What are your students' reactions to the grant?

The children are very excited! They look forward to forming both working relationships and friendships with the children from Haledon. They are also excited about and interested in experiencing Videoconferencing technology in the classroom. The excitement shows whenever we talk about the task!

How have you used/will you use technology?

The technology we are using for this task is a smattering of everything. Obviously, we are using videoconferencing technology; we are also incorporating software such as Word, Power Point, and will be utilizing the Internet.
