Diane Criscuoli What do you teach at Hardyston Elementary? I am the librarian? What elements of the Learner-Active, Technology Infused Classroom have you incorporated into your classrooms? I have used technology in many aspects of research in the library, but the Problem-Based Learning activity I recently implemented really started me on the way to incorporating collaborative, learner-active lessons into my program. The PBL activity I created is called "The Ugly Book Contest". The students (5th graders) took books from the library that had ugly covers that were falling apart and made new ones that would be more attractive and would encourage other students to read them. They had to read the book, write a summary, find out information about the author, and design the jacket. What have your experiences with Problem-Based learning been?
What ways do you use technology in your classroom? In the library, technology is used for research, word-processing, and finding books from our school collection. What is the hardest challenge about implementing Problem-Based Learning activities in your classes? The most difficult challenges are time and technology. It is difficult to coordinate teacher and librarian schedules with the available technology. Things take much longer than you plan. Computer difficulties can also cause setbacks. What is the best thing about implementing Problem-Based Learning activities in your classes? The best thing is the active involvement of the students. When they are working on a purposeful activity and their interest level is high, the product is impressive. What are your goals for your classroom? I would like to incorporate PBL activities into more library lessons. My goal is to collaborate with teachers to create PBL tasks that will be meaningful, content-driven, and promote information-literacy. I would also like to be more actively involved in the support of PBL activities created by the teachers. Copyright © 2002 IDE Corp. All rights reserved. |
