Taken from the Project Description As we enter the new millennium, the emphasis on exploration, conservation and protection of our natural resources is even more focused. Oceans, in particular, are instrumental to the life supporting system of the earth and have always been a mystery. Compared with the terrestrial environment, the oceans of the world remain largely unexplored and yet represent a major portion of the Earth's resources. It is therefore extremely important that this "final frontier" be explored. We need to see if the rich resources available can be used to help meet the needs of the world's expanding populations. The Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs has enlisted the help of the fifth grade students from Sparta, New Jersey and from Haledon, New Jersey. Their mission is to work as a team planning and preparing for a sea voyage that will provide valuable information regarding our oceans and their rich resources. The data collected on this mission will also determine the feasibility of developing an undersea settlement. Researchers have already been chosen and will live and work together on a ship for one year. There will be researchers who are deaf, as well as a Spanish-speaking researchers working together in this environment. The will be collecting data and performing experiments for future exhibitions. The combined expertise of Sparta students (American Sign Language) and Haledon students (Spanish) make them an excellent planning team for this scientific mission. They will use their knowledge and skills in both areas to plan a mission that will be conducive for the researchers who are deaf and the Spanish researchers to live and work together happily and effectively on the ship.
