Professional Development Through Listservs

Wouldn't it be nice to exchange email with people around the world on a topic of interest to you? A Listserv allows you to do that. Every time a member of the list sends a message to the list, everyone on the list receives it. Let's say you join a list on restructuring public education. Someone writes a message about site-based management. The next time you pick up your mail, that message is there. If you respond to the message, all of the members of the list receive your response. Warning ... joining too many lists can significantly clog up your mail. Be selective! When you write to the list, make your subject as descriptive as possible. That way, people can delete those messages that are not of interest to them without reading them. Here's how you do it:

First you need to find a list you like. There are several web sites to help you. As an example, go to the following web site:

Click on Education, then K-12. You'll see two lists. The first is hilites, a list dedicated to providing "high-quality classroom-based collaborative learning projects you can find on the Internet."

IMPORTANT!!! hilites is the list name. Majordomo@gsn.org is the list server. To join, you send an email request to the list server. After that, you address email only to the list name. When you no longer wish to subscribe, you send an email command to the list server, never the list itself!!!

To subscribe, click on the email address of the listserv (or go to send mail and type it in.) In the body of the email, you need to type subscribe followed by the name of the list. For example, I'd send the following message to majordomo@gsn.org:

subscribe hilites

Next time you check your mail, you should receive a note from the server telling you you're up and running. (Note: if you ever wish to unsubscribe, you again email the listserv and enter unsubscribe hilites.)

When you check your mail, you'll receive email from those on the list. If you wish to respond to everyone on the list, send your mail to the list name at the listserv address (hilites@gsn.org). Note: listservs recommend ending each message with your personal email address. That way, if someone wants to respond to you personally, they can use that address. Remember, clicking on "respond" in your email program will respond to the entire list.

Another good place to find lists is:

This is an alphabetical listing of lists related to education.

A listserv is a great way to stay on top of a special interest in your field and connect with others. Join one today!
