AIDS Awareness

Aids org
The official site for the National Aids Foundation. A site with statistics and precise information on AIDS and HIV.

The Body
A fantastic informational site for HIV, AIDS and other STD's. Visitors can take a test to find out their vulnerability to STD's as well as find specific treatment information and links to more resources.

HIV InSite
An educational and up-to-date Web site about HIV/AIDS Awareness, understanding, prevention and governmental policy.

CDC Prevention site
The CDC provides information, articles, educational sites and much more for HIV, AIDS and other STD's.

Aids Memorial Quilt
The goal of this quilt is to allow AIDS patients and family a creative way to express their emotions while dealing with this deadly disease and the after effects on the love ones left behind.

Books and Authors

Best Teenage Angst Books
A colorful literary Web resource for any teenager dealing with adolescent issues: getting along with parents, hating school, first love, feeling awkward, experiencing the pain of growth and other awakenings.

Cynthia Voigt
An eighth grade student from John Jay Middle School in Cross River, New York authored this biography of the writer Cynthia Voigt. Also included are reviews of favorite Voigt titles.

Judy Blume
A must see site for any Judy Blume fan! Included are photos, advice for young writers, answers to questions asked most about Blume, and summaries of all her books.

BSL Career Information
This site, geared to students, provides descriptions and preparation for careers related to the following: science, music, arts, physical education, social studies, reading, and math. There is also a teacher's guide for educational resources.

Career Trail
This site helps students begin their search for a career they may like. It is a guide for jobs, resumes, and vocational interests, and provides a career quiz the students can take, a library of books of interest, how to use your dreams to set goals, and also a Web link for the students on putting it all together.

This site has a tremendous amount of career guidance and research opportunities for students. Included is a multitude of career links, such as a teen resource area, online career center, education and career center, career choices, and "career city". Check it out and explore the possibilities.

Food Timeline
This site gives a timeline of food from the Vikings up to the present. A great way to see how different societies cultivated the food they are known to produce.

Baby "Helps" Teens Think It Over
A computerized doll, programmed to mirror the needs of a real baby, shows teens what parenting is really like. This is an article about the doll with links to several ideas for implementation on parenting skills with direct links to ideas for curriculum implementation.

Skills for Today's Workforce
This site gives links to workplace, personal, life, math and study skills. There are also communications skills links including resume and report writing, grammar, interviewing, speaking and presenting skills.

Family and Consumer Science Resource Links
This is a fabulous site with various links to everything related to Family and Consumer Science. The links are extensive and include everything from understanding food labels to textile information.

Diabetes Awareness

American Diabetes Association
This site will provide information on prevention, detection and details about events for the month of November. Also find great recipes and links to other resources on Diabetes.

CDC's Diabetes Program
On this site, several links will elaborate on how to teach about Diabetes and then give more links for further information. The educational section is chalked full of lesson ideas.

George Washington Hospital
This site is written in Spanish. Find resources for bilingual and world language Spanish students on Diabetes

International Diabetes Foundation
November 14, 2004 is National Diabetes Day. Find out what is going on in the world to recognize this day and how you or your students can participate. There is a Spanish speaking site for bilingual and world language Spanish speaking students.

Youth Zone
The National Diabetes Association has a Web site dedicated to young people. This site will define, explain and give resources specifically for young people. Great for elementary school and middle school students.

SAT (The New SAT tests)

Would Shakespeare get into Swathmore?
This is an article written for Atlantic.com about the new SAT Test and the change of the standard scores. Most of the article addresses the new Writing section and the change of the base score for this section of the SAT Test. The new test is to begin in 2005.

The College Board
This site gives excellent information about the new test and what to expect in each area. Find free brochures, example testing questions and information about registration. There is also a Q&A area for teachers, parents, administrators and students.

New York Times Question of the Day
The NY Times gives a SAT Prep Question of the Day. Each day a new question appears for the students to answer. Once the question is answered and submitted, the correct answer is displayed. At that time, there is a link for further explanation as to WHY answer was correct or incorrect. This question changes daily and there is a link for strategies to answer the specific question of the day.

College Power Prep
This site is NOT a free site but does contain some free software downloads and tips for taking the new SAT Test. On this site there are free software downloads for Test taking tips, vocabulary terms and math questions. At anytime if it is not a free area, a warning does appear and you are asked for a registration number.

Quiz Hub
Learn new vocabulary words with this fun online interactive game. Lay a matching game to reinforce SAT vocabulary words. Simply click on a word an find the match by clicking on the definition.

Scholarships

Scholarships.com
Students can enter their information and get results that best suit their qualifications. There are over 600,000 scholarships and over one billion dollars worth of money available through their database. They also have a database of educational loans as well.

FastWeb
This site matches the student up with scholarships, grants, and fellowships. It also provides college applications and help on selecting a "perfect" school.

Absolutely Scholarships
This site has a partnership with eStudentLoans.com. Therefore, a student can look on either database. The site is free and gives you access to about 200,000 scholarships.

Collegeboard.com
The College Board compiles the scholarships found on this site. There are over one million awards. This is actually part of a larger site that could really help a student preparing for college.

FastAid.com
Scholarships given out by the private sector are the focus of this site. They also provide helpful hints on how to apply for these kinds of scholarships.

Scholarship Experts
The main difference with this site is that it is a pay site. It costs $29.95 to join but you get a larger database in a variety of categories and subdivisions. You can also preview the site before paying for the subscription. The site does provide some personal help if it is needed.

Testing

Kaplan Educational Centers
A comprehensive site at which you can find everything to meet your testing needs. Download free software for the SAT, GRE and other tests. Read through a list of the 100 most common SAT words. Find out test dates and sample questions for various tests. There is also a comprehensive links page that lets you connect to a list of colleges and graduate schools.

TESTPREP.COM
A unique online test preparation site -- "An ordinary little company that just happens to be helping millions of students without getting greedy about it." Visitors to this site are able to have their math and verbal scores on a real SAT analyzed. After that, you can sharpen your skills by browsing thousands of screens of detailed skill review lessons.

College PowerPrep
At this site you can download three free programs: classroom software, diagnostic software, and vocabulary building software. Information about financial aid, junior and senior year timetables, and general advice about college is also included.

Testing in the News
Included at this site is an index of articles regarding many aspects of standardized testing in public schools. A great site for conducting research.
