Thomson Gale Resources for African History Month
Based on the book Black History Resource Book, by Thomson Gale, this site contains resources for all ages levels. Here you can find several links, activities and timelines and quizzes for the classroom.

Scholastics - Black History Month Activities and Resources
Scholastics Web site gives educators of all grade levels ideas for projects and lessons. There are great links to biographies, projects and tools and teaching strategies. An interactive timeline is also provided, great for middle school and up.

Enchanted Learning

Time Magazine for Kids
Celebrate Black History Month with Time Magazine for Kids. This online resource is dedicated to providing articles that are age appropriate for elementary and middle schools. Time also supplies a list of project and lesson ideas.

The Big Picture
This site is an all- inclusive site with many links for researching Black History Month. Here you'll find information about biographies of specific people, historical events, African American culture, pictures and much more. A must see!

Yahooligans Biographies
This site lists African Americans according to students' interest: scientists, entertainers, artists, politicians, authors/poets and so much more. It is a great site to have students really research a person they are motivated to study.

Harlem Renaissance
This site centers on the writers and painters of the Renaissance. Also contains a Harlem Renaissance Listserv, pictures of Harlem Renaissance Art, full text of poetry and prose, and an examination of famous women of the time period as well. A must see!

Harlem Renaissance: Pivotal Period in the Development of Afro-American Culture
From the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute, this is a site for high school students. It is a sample unit on the Harlem Renaissance, that includes objectives, activities and reading lists.

A Great Day in Harlem
This site presents information on one of the key musical movements, jazz. Discusses roots and impact of the time period on music. Students click on different sections of a famous photograph of 60 jazz musicians from Harlem to be connected to information and timelines.

Bill of Rights

American Civil Liberties Union Freedom Network
The American Civil Liberties Union has created a vibrant, comprehensive site that touches on most of the current issues surrounding the amendments in the Bill of Rights. Check out the "Ask Sybil Liberty" section that addresses the questions that teenagers have about their rights as outlined in the Constitution and Supreme Court Decisions. Be aware-the ACLU has some very strong opinions about the sanctity of the rights listed in the Bill of Rights.

Archiving Early America: Bill of Rights Page
This site, part of the "Archiving Early America" Web site, contains a brief history of the Bill of Rights, but its main features are the pictures of the actual documents along with a full text copy of the amendments.

FindLaw Constitution Page
FindLaw's page on the United States Constitution contains a link on each of the Amendments that includes the text of the amendment along with scholarly commentary and descriptions of the key issues with references to applicable Supreme Court Decisions. While the site is exhaustive in its coverage, the writing is fairly difficult, almost technical in nature.

ABOUT.COM Civil Liberties Page
This site, sponsored by About.com, is a great resource for Bill of Rights and civil liberty issues. The site includes links to civil liberties organizations, information on Bill of Rights issues such as free speech on the Internet and search and seizure, and daily news updates. One innovative twist is the "Basics of Liberty" section that gives specific instructions on how to protect your liberties in different situations ("How to Protect Your Privacy" and "What to do if You are Arrested"). Easy to navigate, though it definitely has a pro-libertarian bent.

The Children's Bill of Rights
This page is a "Children's Bill of Rights" put together via the Internet. Though it is an international document that is not completely reflective of the U.S. Bill of Rights, it is an interesting place to start a discussion about the Bill of Rights in the lives of Children.

Vietnamese Buddhism
This site gives some background and information about Buddhism in Vietnam. It also stresses the importance of Buddhism in regards to the Vietnam war.

This site, maintained by a self-confessed "lay person," purports to explore the basics of the teachings of Buddha. There is also a guest book and a chat room that operates at scheduled times.

Karmapa- the Black Hat Lama of Tibet
This is the official Web site of the leader of this sect of Tibetian Buddhists.

Buddhist Studies
This site has a nice visual of the different schools of Zen Buddhism and traces their lineage on a Zen Buddhist family tree. There are also many links to other areas of interest.

Cinco De Mayo

The History
This site is text based. It does provide text on the history of Cino De Mayo in English and in Spanish. The facts are written so it is easy to read and understand for upper middle school and high school students.

Early Elementary WebQuest
Second and third grade students are asked to write an article about Cinco De Mayo for the local newspaper. The task in well written and provides a rubric for students to follow.

Kids Domain
Kids Domain provides a fabulous resource for elementary school teachers. Find downloads for Mac and PC based computers, games, images, worksheets, online postcards and much more!

World Book
World Book editors have created an online feature celebrating Mexican heritage. The articles in the feature are from World Book and provide the history of Mexico and the important role Mexican Americans and other Hispanic Americans have played in the history of the United States.

Citizenship

Learning Adventures in Citizens
This site, designed by PBS, is a good resource for teachers for many different topics regarding America and its history. Located here are resources for social science inquiry and volunteerism. It is nice place to get ideas for student centered learning activities. There is a place for lesson plans and teacher talk.

Institute for Citizenship
This is a site for having your students researching what are characteristics of a good citizen. There are further links about citizenship education and voter awareness. The reading level is simple and it is an easy site to browse through.

Active Citizenship: Empowering America's Youth
This is a site for educators to find information on an on-line course for developing active citizenship in students, civic values, and service learning. There are many great quotes high school students about the importance of developing effective citizens in our world today.

Character Education
This is a good site for teachers to use as a guideline in building strong and moral characters in our children today. There is good information for researching purposes with many other links to explore. It might also be used by students as a guide as they develop programs to teach younger students character development.

Character Counts!
This is a wonderful reference for teachers who are looking for books related to a particular character trait. Included is a list of books for teaching the theme of trust, respect, fairness, caring, responsibility, and citizenship. These traits are defined as well.

Civil Rights Museum
The Civil Rights Museum is located in Tennessee. This site provides information on Civil Rights Leaders from the 1600's to the present including a large amount of information on Martin Luther King, Jr. The site offers activities, e-cards and additional links on the Civil Rights Movement.

Malcolm X: A Research Site
This site has a mass amount of information about Malcolm X. There is Real Audio for many of Malcolm X's speeches along with photographs and a written legacy of Malcolm X. Information about his family and a bibliography of the Civil Rights leader is also provided.

Stokely Carmichael Page
The Stokely Carmichael site has great images from the 1967 speech he made to a high school in Seattle, Washington. See the entire text of the speech or listen to the audio. Included in this site is a 25 minute slide show on the famous speech.

American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
The AACAP Web site posts articles on the many aspects of child and adolescent mental / psychological well being. Currently, there is a short response to the possible value of returning Elian to his father. More research can be done on the topic of one-parent families after the death of the other parent.

Okay, you've studied the animals in the Amazon. Now, learn about the Quichua people of the Ecuadorian Amazon, through online games and activities. This site has a great ecotourism simulation project along the Río Napo.

This site was designed so children from all cultures can discuss and read current issues around the world that affect their peers. NationalGeographic.com Kids!
This is one of the best sites for young readers providing resources for online information about the world, its people, and its wildlife. It even has a great database of world maps that you can print for use in your classroom.

Lords of the Earth
This site is filled with resources on Mayan/Aztecan/Incan cultures. It helps students learn about these cultures through the study of archaeology and anthropology.

D - Day -- June 6th

The American Experience
PBS provides a fabulous site with video, articles, timelines, and maps all related to D-Day. A teacher's resource area is provided with lesson ideas and activities.

Untold Stories of D - Day
National Geographic provides a site with information about D-Day that is not commonly known. The site boasts the ability to step back in time and here information about D-Day from the photographers, journalists and writers that were there. Plenty of image galleries are provided and a link to the online National D-Day museum in Virginia.

Normandy
Britannica online gives a detailed description of the invasion of Normandy. The site is easy to navigate with detailed links to the "build up", invasion, fighting, and memorials. An interesting addition to this is a link to information behind the movie "Saving Private Ryan."

Experiencing the War -The Veteran's History Project
This is a unique Web site where the stories are not a formal history of war, but a collection of individual feelings and personal memories from the people who were there.

The National D - Day Museum
The National D-Day Museum is an online resource for everything about D-Day. There is a "kids korner" containing online puzzles, games and quizzes. The teacher's area has fabulous lesson ideas and links for all grade levels.

Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of the Thirteen Colonies
This site shows the original Declaration of Independence of the thirteen colonies. It also highlights biographies of the authors and the states they represented.

The Story Channel
This site provides students with a concise explanation the Declaration of Independence. It also details the call for independence, biographies of the signers, and a quiz for testing knowledge about the Declaration and Revolutionary War.

Revolutionary Web Quest
This site is a short Web quest about the Revolutionary War that details the making of the Declaration of Independence and includes a simulation game that incorporates math concepts.

Elections

Election 2004
Scholastic provides information about the presidential election in words that younger children can understand! This site provides information about the candidates in text, video and sound clips. There is also an activity area for teachers and a related books area.

Presidents of the United States
This is a great site for students in grades 8 and up! There are plenty of links about the present and past presidents of the United States. The links provided will give information about assassination attempts, births and deaths, issues facing specific terms of presidents and much more.

New Jersey Historical Sites

Historic Morris Visitors Center
Morris County has some of the most important historical sites in the state particularly when it comes to the history of the Revolutionary War. This site contains links to Morristown National Historical Park, which was the site of the Continental Army camp during the years of 1779-1780. This site also provides information on some other historical sites of interest. These include Fosterfields, a working 19th century farm; Cooper Grist Mill; and Mount Hope Historical Park where some of the earliest mining was done in this area.

Indian King Tavern Museum
Indian King Tavern, located in Haddonfield, is an example of an 18th century tavern and its architecture. In 1777, when the Revolutionary War had made meeting in Trenton impossible, this tavern also was where the NJ Assembly officially declared its independence and established its statehood. This site gives plenty of historical info as well as details on the tavern's architecture.

Old Barracks Museum
As the site states: "The Old Barracks Museum in Trenton, originally built in 1758 to house troops during the French and Indian War, is best remembered for its role in the 1776 and 1777 Battles of Trenton during the Revolutionary War." This well designed site contains tons of info on the museum as well as a neat feature called "Ask the Historian" where you can find answers to all your questions about the Revolutionary War.
