Active Algebra
Variables are entered into all the activities by using the slider. If you obtain a password then your pupils can carry out a short test on each of the investigations. The results are saved and can be accessed by the teacher.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives for Interactive Mathematics
This Internet site is part of a three year project at Utah State University to develop a library of interactive, web based virtual manipulatives or concept tutorials, mostly in the form of Java applets, for mathematics instruction in grades K to 12.

Authentic Math

UBUYACAR
This a site devoted to an authentic Problem-Based Learning activity about buying a car. There are details on implementing it, the teacher's role, questions to ask, evaluation materials, and an assessment model.

Math in Daily Life
There are many activities provided at this site that demonstrate how math affects everyday decisions. There are examples given for home decorating, cooking, population growth, universal language and more.

Problems of the Week
Problems of the week are creative and challenging for students in grades three through twelve. Space is provided for teachers to discuss these problems of the week and suggest different ideas for implementing them into the curricula.

Kelly's AP Calculus Home Page
A nice example of a class Web page complete with an awards area for top students. There are places to join a chat, get info on the AP, or answer a question of the week. Mr. Kelly also grades his students on answering math questions via email; it seems a different student is required to answer all questions for a week, They'll handle anything from Algebra through Calculus.

Calculus@internet
A gateway to links of all types. If there's a topic within Calculus that you want to research, type it in here. There are links for everything from online quizzes to teacher support.

Visual Calculus
Animations of standard calculus topics. Visitors can watch clips that demonstrate determining area using limits, or animations of working derivations.

Money Talks
An instructional unit about solving math problems with money. Even though this unit uses Canadian money, it is adaptable to American currency as well.

Google Directory: Java Applets
This is a collection of dozens of Java Applets that allows the user to manipulate information to more thoroughly understand math concepts. The applets are varied by grade level and topic. Students can change points on graphs, manipulate radii of circles, and plot functions.

Cyberchase: Games
Paired with a television show on PBS, this interactive Web site uses multimedia games to help students ages 8-12 learn math. Visually interesting with characters and even a plot, it definitely will engage students as they learn about patterns, tangrams, symmetry, etc.

Euclid's Elements
The complete text of Euclid's Elements, this Web site is great for high school math classes. Each of Euclid's concepts is explained with a Java applet that can be manipulated by the student.

Polyhedra Lighting

Paper Models of Polyhedra
This site is filled with forms to print and fold to create a wealth of different types of polyhedra. The VRML option allows you to manipulate the object, including walking, panning, turning, rolling, and studying the polyhedra. This is a great extension site for those students who complete the Polyhedra Lighting task and are ready to be challenged to explore various other kinds of polyhedra, including Platonic and Archimedian solids.

Uniform Polyhedra
This site, hosted by a math consultant, explores all 75 uniform polyhedra with detailed information on each, including the number of faces, edges, and vertices; and animated rotations of each figure.

George Hart's Site
George Hart is a computer science professor and a geometric sculptor, and his site allows you explore many of his fascinating creations. His site is also a doorway to a great number of wonderful sites that allow you to explore polyhedra, including his Encyclopedia of Polyhedra that claims to hold thousands of polyhedra (I didn't count them!)

Math Forum
Math Forum is hosted by Drexel University. This section introduces students to polyhedra and is a great site for those who need to review the basics. From this simple but informative and interesting page, students can link to other related sites.

Probability and Gambling

An Introduction to Probability
A clearly stated synopsis of the major concepts in probability. The language is a bit advanced and seems aimed primarily at students over 14.

Dr. Math's Introduction to Probability
Dr. Math is an interactive forum where students can ask questions about math and receive personalized answers. This provides a clear and simple overview of the concept of probability.

Pythagorean Theorem

Pythagorean Theorem
This interactive lesson uses quizzes, java applets and diagrams to explain the theorem thoroughly. Though a bit heavy on the text, it is also clearly laid out and easy to follow.

NOVA's Pythagorean Puzzle
This Shockwave puzzle allows students to manipulate a diagram to demonstrate the theorem. There is also a link to "real world" problems using the Pythagorean Theorem, such as throwing a runner out in baseball, using a ladder to climb in a window, and scaling the pyramids.

Pythagorean Theorem: Java Applets
These interactive Java Applets illustrate a variety of different aspects of the Theorem. The "Pythagoras Tree" is especially cool!

Glencoe Online: Pythagorean Theorem Online Quiz
This is a series of interactive quizzes on assorted math skills (at different levels) that allow the students to check their work and get explanations of the solutions.

The Stock Market Game
The Stock Market Game gives students the chance to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in a real-time portfolio. There is an area where teachers can take a tour and an area to ask questions before starting the simulation. There is a fee per student to use this program. Information is provided on the site.

CNBC
This is a free on-line stock market simulation, is a ten-week activity designed to teach students in grades 4 through 12 about investing, money management, and responsible decision making. Each team of students receives a virtual $100,000, which they use to create a stock portfolio.

StockQuest
An educational and interactive site offering free global stock games, especially for educators. Into this global stock market simulation are lesson plans, stock guides, and online investing resources.

Investing for Kids
A site designed by kids for kids. It examines stocks, bonds, mutual funds etc. to teach the principles of saving and investing to beginners and seasoned investors, and includes a stock market game for learning how to invest.

Telling Time for Younger Students

Snapdragon Time
Your students will love to play the telling time game on this site. Not only does it help students learn how to tell time it also give them ample opportunity to use small motor skills by using the mouse to move the hands on the clock.

Teacher View
Students can practice telling time by analog type clocks or digital clocks on this site.

Harcourt School
This site provides a fun telling time game with the accompaniment of a Willy the Watchdog. Your students will love it.

Webquests, Math

Baseball Predictions
Using internet resources, you will obtain the team statistics for at least ten teams and use correlation to determine which other statistic is most closely related to the winning percentage. Once you have determined the most closely related statistic, find the league player who was highest in that statistic, and use linear regression to predict the winning percentage with that player on your team.

Buying vs. Renting a Home
Students will work in groups using the criteria set for their specific role. Given different budgets, students will decide whether to buy or rent a home. They will end up shopping for the actual house in the area they live in. All calculations and information will be derived from online sources.

Math Magazine
Students will work in groups and have their own specific job as part of the editing team to create a Math Magazine for teens. Job choices include editor, designer and organizer. Together the group will collaborate to create the materials for the magazine.

Metric Quest
The Worldwide Commission of Measurement has asked students to decide whether or not the US should be like the rest of the world and change to the metric system.

Titanic - What do the numbers tell us?
In this WebQuest history and mathematics are linked by statistics. The stories of the people of the Titanic give the data real meaning.
