Neopets.com is a fun site that is completely free. Students can choose and take care of up to 4 "pets" (they are make believe characters). The basic idea is that you adopt a pet, play with it, care for it, and watch it grow. As it grows, it becomes more demanding.
Cyber Tiger by National Geographic for Kids
Here is a free site that sets a scenario for students about adopting a tiger. Students are asked to set up a training, feeding, and care schedule for the tigers. It is an interactive site and shows actual photos of a variety of different types of tigers.

register a classroom profile and can search for a classroom to contact
using many different criteria, including age, geography, or language.
