Problem-Based Learning at Chester W. Taylor Jr. Elementary in Zephyrhills, Florida

zephyrhills-article-on-cwtes-2nd-gradeThe Zephyrhills Free Press in it’s November 10th edition describes how second grade students at Chester W. Taylor Jr. Elementary School in Zephyrhills, Florida created dozens of “unique, handmade brochures” to help encourage tourism to their city.  The brochures are the end product of an authentic and relevant problem-based learning unit developed by teachers during training with the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom. Based on the book “Students Taking Charge” by Dr. Nancy Sulla of IDE Corp., Chester Taylor Elementary “adopted this method of teaching three years ago”.  Second grade teacher Marabeth Ward comments “that she has seen great improvements in the students already”.

Ward describes her students as “more invested in their work and determined to learn” and her teaching as “a lot more student-driven”. She says her students are learning “life goals that are going to translate as they get older”. “I really love it,” said Ward.

Randolph Reporter Describes EdTech as “Impressive” in Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classrooms

Randolph ArticleIn a recent Randolph Reporter article, editor Mike Montalto, visits the Canfield Avenue School in Mine Hill, NJ and observes that when educational technology is implemented through the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom, it “can give students a new perspective on problem solving”.

Having graduated from high school in 2011, Mr. Montalto reflects on his own experience with the evolving educational technology and describes his teachers then as “not fully aware on how to fully take advantage of these technologies to benefit their students”. He describes how “the technology was never utilized to its full potential” and there was not “serious thought into how these new classroom tools could be best used to enhance and transform the learning experience for children”.

Mr. Montalto, states Canfield Avenue School now “not only appears to own the latest technologies for the classroom environment, but also has a plan to incorporate it into teachers plans and is effectively changing the way that courses can be taught”. He claims this will produce a “generation of students who will enter the world after completing their traditional schooling with a firm grasp on a variety of technologies, a better understanding of the developing world around them and a new approach to problem solving and critical thinking with technology as an invaluable tool and resource”.

South Orangetown, NY Students Go Back to School and to the LATI Classroom

SOCSD_RocklandTimesArticle8-18-2016In its August 18th, 2016 edition, the Rockland County Times states that the “South Orangetown School Administration has been working this summer on a valuable series of initiatives to enhance student achievement for the 2016-2017 academic year.” The newspaper quotes Dr. Robert Pritchard, Superintendent of the South Orangetown Central School District as saying, “We want students to exercise the part of their brains that allow them to solve problems that have yet to be solved. Integrating the arts, sciences and humanities fosters creativity and innovation for young learners.”

Dr. Pritchard goes on to describe the Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom as a place where “students are ‘empowered’ to take responsibility for setting goals, scheduling time, using resources and making decisions. They are more focused and get involved with problem-solving on open-ended situations by working independently or with their classmates.”
